FLY FISHING IN THE JEMEZ MOUNTAINS, NEW MEXICO
The Jemez Mountains offer amazing fly fishing close to the Albuquerque area. There are many small streams in the Jemez area that are loaded with rainbow and brown trout. Fish average about nine or ten inches. Fly fishing the the pristine streams of the Jemez can be a lot of fun and anglers have a chance to catch a lot of fish. There are many remote areas of the Jemez that see very little fishing action so there is plenty of opportunity to avoid the crowd. If you like fly fishing in small streams for feisty trout, there are few better places to be than the Jemez Mountains.
The Jemez Mountains are just over an hour away from Albuquerque. The Jemez is one of the places that I go fly fishing most frequently because of the close proximity to Albuquerque and great trout fishing.
You won’t catch big trout in the Jemez but you will catch a lot of them. In fact, the biggest trout I have ever caught in the Jemez is equivalent an average size trout at the San Juan (about 17 inches). But what the Jemez lacks in size it makes up for in number. I go to the Jemez Mountains expecting to catch 20 or 30 fish. Plus, the mountains are beautiful and on the stretch of river I fly fish I have never seen another angler.
